The stick and poke tattoo (aka hand poke tattoo) world has changed.
In just a few short years, we’ve seen a total seachange in opinion. Before 2020, major news sources (SF Chronicle, NY Times, VICE, NEWSWEEK) wrote about Stick and Poke Tattoo Kitยฎ as a fun but dangerous gimmick product. People mocked the idea that people could tattoo at home – and on themselves (even though it’s literally one of the oldest practices in the world).
“It’s not safe!” the public decried. “You’ll get diseases!” and, “You can’t do your own tattoo,ย it’s HARD!” But hundreds of thousands of people tried it at home during the pandemic. The world saw that DIY hand poke tattooing can be a safe, easy and rewarding art form.
Fast forward to 2023.
We’ve now sold over 50,000 kits and there are many hand poke tattoo kits to choose from on amazon, ebay and etsy! Last year we were written up as the best gift for a GEN Z er in the LATimes Holiday Gift Guide! Public opinion has changed and we’re happy to have been such a big part of it.
However, this change within global capitalism comes at a cost to consumers and our planet. Most people don’t know that most hand poke kits out there now are simple cheap knock-offs of our original kit.ย These kits include similar kinds of things – BUT – more cheaply made products – and lots more PLASTIC. Yes, an attractive price, but harmful to consumers and the planet. Who knows what is in those inks and those balms!?

Over the past 5 years, We’ve worked to systematically remove the remaining few pieces of plastic and petroleum products from our 18 items in the kit. It was the gloves, the wipes, the plastic ink bottle. We don’t use plastic dipping jars – they are little mini-glass jars! And Today, I am very proud to say that we are rid of yet another plastic pouch. Our vegan, organic Stick & Poke Tattoo Kit Aftercare Balm is now housed in a reusable, recyclable little black screw-top tin!

A lot of what we do must be packaged by caring hands.ย Our kit is now packaged in paper bags, wax bags, glass bottles of ink, tins, biodegradable gloves, paper bags, baby glass jars, and booklets. All of the products are neatly packed into a cardboard box and paper bag. It’s adorable! And, it’s future-approved.
We will continue to remove the plastic from the kits until you can bury the whole thing and it will compost into dust that you can use in your garden. ;-)
